CSc 369e: Embedded Systems II
This module addresses the problems of developing for increasingly complex Embedded Systems including emerging high level platforms such as Microsoft's .NET Micro Framework, and Java Micro Edition. Motivations for platforms in this space and the increasing need for macro control of embedded systems along with enabling technologies making new platforms realisable, including type safe, typically object-oriented, languages and the increasing performance of embedded hardware. Relationship to classical embedded architectures based on real-time operating systems such as Windows CE, VxWorks, Embedded Linux, and eCos, and the continued need for such systems. Applications and implications of higher level (macro) control systems, including support for power and system management, and high level I/O subsystems for networking, user interfaces, etc.
The module includes a case study taken from a commercial solution such as Microsoft's .NET Micro Framework or SunSpots/Java Micro Edition and through examples looks at the build tools, debugging strategies for such systems.
The course runs as an ad hoc set of lectures, workshops and practicals.
